Invasion of Textures...Goodbye D.C.

I literally have hours left in the most powerful city in the world. Tomorrow I will pack up my belongings, flag a taxi, catch a plane and be in the arms of my wonderful and loving family. That's tomorrow...tonight I reflect. This final week can only be described as an invasion of textures, a heightened awareness of the greatness that surrounds me. Let me recount my last few days in Washington D.C.

My Great Aunt Micky was in town for an education conference, and she decided to treat me to a night at Ruth's Chris Steak House. Broiled at 1800 degrees to sear in the juices, my steak was served to me on a sizzling 500 degree plate. The steak literally melted in my mouth as my ribeye continued to steam off my plate. My vegetables were equally fresh and simply rich in taste. The night was filled with laughter and great conversations. The waiters not only knew how my steak was prepared, but could describe to me the USDA Prime seal and how the fat cattle are cornfed steers from Midwest feedlots. After telling them we were South Dakota Beef producers, they treated us to a sinfully delicious bread pudding. I know if it tastes that good, it must be a calorie-free gift from the heavens. Therefore, I feel no guilt.

Tonight, I went out with my co-worker Kerry. We shopped at Pentagon City and rounded off the evening in China Town at Rosa's Mexicano Restaurant. They combined the perfect vegetables right in front of us to make the best guacamole I have ever tasted. We followed our appetizer with Carne Asada. The fajitas were absolutely perfect, and the atmosphere was to die for. It seemed every young person in the city met at Rosa's tonight to prove how my generation will soon lead the future policy for years to come. A glass window overlooked the city. Only in Washington D.C. can one find the exquisite architecture glow majestically with the promise of a better tomorrow.

At times I missed my farm and family so much, it seemed my 10 weeks couldn't go fast enough. Now that they are nearly over, I guess I'm a bit nostalgic about leaving this glittering city behind. Although the city life offers fascinating sights, unique food, and motivated people ready to change the world, home is truly where the heart is...and my heart is in South Dakota.

I can hardly wait to see my cattle once again! I can smell the manure already, and I know my shovel has missed me! South Dakota, here I come!
