Well, if any of you haven't guessed, I LOVE BEEF! and I LOVE AGRICULTURE! Imagine the problem I have with a movie that misrepresents my rural lifestyle, spreads lies to promote vegetarianism, and tries to kill my agricultural livlihood. The movie, Fast Food Nation is representing with a pun on words, Do you want lies with that? These "lies are directed at the beef industry". As a beef producer myself, the only lies I see are the ones being told by this fictitious movie.
The San Francisco Chronicle released an article about the upcoming release of the movie, Fast Food Nation. The article discusses Eric Schlosser's decision to not make a documentary from the book, it speaks with a McDonald's representative who believes that the movie is just Hollywood, and it outlines the main points of the movie.
To me, I think Eric Schlosser decided not to make his movie just like the book because it gave him flexibility to make the movie even more gruesome than the book. By calling it a fiction, they can make outrageous statements that people might take for truth.
The movie blames the beef industry on a number of things, including the mistreatment of illegal immigrants and the obesity epidemic. For the real truth, check out a site made by real beef producers and cattlemen. I can account for the information presented on this website myself because I am a producer. I live and breathe the rural life, and I know the sacrifices that are made to make it all work. In my next entry, I will share some of these experiences with you so you can get a sneak peak on what this great industry is really like. Stay tuned!
